Job Summary

The Certified Medical Assistant (CMA) will share in providing patient care in a clinical setting in accordance with the scope and practice guidelines set forth by the American Association of Medical Assistants (AAMA) or the National Certified Medical Assistant Association (NCMA). Practice will be completed professional and be governed by the certifying body and the specific policies KIC maintains to ensure that all patient needs are met.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

Incumbent will prepare and gather information needed for patient visit and room patient per clinic guidelines. Completes appropriate aspects of patient care to include: vital signs, height, weight, and an eye exam if needed. Setup and assist in procedures, while observing sterile technique.

Provide approved injections (vaccines and state-approved IM medications), ECG’s, pre-exam prep, assist provider during exam, collects lab specimens, and performs CLIA waived point-of-care (POC) lab testing.

Performs minor, noninvasive treatments to include: applying simple dressings, providing simple dressing changes, and suture removal after wound assessment by a provider.

Assist in moving and/or transporting patients as needed. Answer patient questions or refer them to the proper source. Clean exam rooms per protocol, observing standard precautions based on reported symptoms.

Provision of approved medications after completion of school with oversite by Registered Nurse.

Maintains a working inventory of medical supplies. Performs daily stock of exam rooms and keeps supply storage area clean and organized. Cleans dirty / used supplies and equipment. Reports any unsafe conditions to appropriate supervisor upon discovery.

Public Relations

Welcomes and provides information to patients, visitors, and tribal members either in person or phone. Assists and follows up with patients regarding the Dolly Jensen Fund eligibility information and approval process. Addresses administrative function complaints by speaking with supervisor to resolve.

Sends reminder to patients to schedule preventive care appointment. Completes reminder call one day prior to scheduled appointment. Adheres to rescheduling appointment protocol.

Attends and participates in appropriate committee meetings to improve quality processes and maintain quality results. Teamwork’s with other Clinic staff in preparation, participation, and closure of medical services daily.

  • Knowledge of and ability to provide basic nursing procedures for a variety of patients;

  • Knowledge and ability to carry out rules of Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA), which protects patient rights;

    Physical Activities

Must be able to hear. Specific vision abilities include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus. Ability to use hands to finger, handle or operate objects, tools, or controls. Reach with hands and arms, climb or balance, stoop kneel, crouch, and taste or smell. Routinely lifting and carry items and boxes up to forty (40) pounds. Position demands long periods of standing and walking as well as the ability to lift, bend, and stoop in the process of patient care.

Work Environment

The environment involves the usual risks and stress within an ambulatory health care facility. The employee may be exposed to communicable diseases. Safety precautions for employees such as blood drawing for screening of various diseases such as hepatitis, required immunizations, etc. are necessary.

The employee is occasionally subject to verbal abuse, threats, and physical violence from angry, hostile, or disgruntled patients and/or family members

License(s)

Possess current valid State of Alaska driver's license with a record acceptable to KIC’s Insurance carrier.

QUALIFICATIONS

Education

High school diploma or equivalent required. Possess a current American Association of Medical Assistants (AAMA) or the National Certified Medical Assistant Association (NCMA) Certification.

Experience

Two (2) years’ experience required. Medical Assistant experience with eligibility to sit for testing will be considered with the expected completion of certification within six (6) months of hire.
