About the Role

The Market & Industry Intelligence unit manages and supports the Port Department’s market research and analysis. Our responsibilities span three critical areas.

(One) The unit is responsible for the collection, cleansing, and management of data pertaining to all shipping activity at the Port of New York & New Jersey— utilizing this information to produce analysis in monthly & quarterly reports.

(Two) The Market & Industry Intelligence group provides concise reports on economic, trade, supply chain, and business trends at the Port of NY & NJ marine terminals with a focus on how the various developments affect activity at the Port of New York & New Jersey.

(Three) Our unit supports benefit-cost analyses for potential infrastructure projects, produces annual activity forecasts for the Port Department, manages the Cargo Facility Charge program and calculates the associated long-term cash flows from this program to be used in funding infrastructure projects.

Responsibilities

Reporting to the Manager, Market & Industry Intelligence, the incumbent will:

  • Research, analyze, and provide concise reports describing conditions within the ocean shipping industry with a focus on how those conditions affect the Port of NY & NJ's business.

  • Assist in managing relevant data sets & databases while improving processes and automation around collection, cleansing, storage, and reporting.

  • Responsible for monthly and ad hoc reporting of monthly shipping activity at the Port of NY/NJ.

  • Manage the Cargo Facility Charge (CFC) program, including database updates, performance of required queries, invoice reconciliation & general accounting. The CFC program is a fee based on cargo throughput that is used to assist in the payback of capital infrastructure projects.

  • Participate in research projects involving multiple groups within the Port Department to advance department initiatives.

  • If suitable to candidate’s education and/or experience, assist in developing forecasting methods.

  • Assist in managing post-graduate fellows that have six-month work rotations within the Market & Industry Intelligence group.

This position will require the incumbent to travel independently to the various Port facilities and construction sites within the facility, both of which are not easily accessible via public transportation.

Minimum Qualifications

· Bachelor's degree in business, supply chain, marine transportation, economics, analytics, data science, or related field from an accredited college or university.

· 2 - 4 years of experience in the maritime shipping, rail transportation, international trade, supply chain, logistics, economics, or other related areas.

· Proven experience managing data, including market and data analysis projects from scoping to completion.

· The selected candidate will be required to pass a Federal Security Background check and obtain a Transportation Workers Identification Credential (TWIC) to work in a maritime environment as required by Department of Homeland Security.

Desired Qualifications

· Experience utilizing a combination of the following for data analysis— Excel, Access, Power BI/Tableau, SQL, programming language (Python, R, VBA, DAX, etc.)
