The Department of Laboratory Medicine and Pathology has an outstanding opportunity for a Research Scientist/Engineer 1 to join their team.

The Research Scientist/Engineer 1 (NE S UAW RSE) position primarily supports the Malaria Molecular Diagnostic Laboratory, which supports malaria clinical trials, field studies, and pre-clinical studies to help develop drugs/vaccines/diagnostics and to accelerate the elimination of malaria globally. Staff will support projects including clinical trials of candidate malaria products, malaria epidemiology studies, and a diagnostic biomarker development program. The position also provides periodic support for other Murphy Laboratory experiments aimed at malaria immunology projects.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES Perform malaria molecular assays for clinical trials and research studies (80%): • Specimen management • Preparation of samples, standards and quality control (QC) samples • Preparation of reagents necessary to conduct assays which involves tube labeling and repetitive movements • Regularly perform assays and evaluate assay performance • Perform regular maintenance of involved equipment and laboratory spaces • End report results in a timely manner • Apply independent critical thinking skills for troubleshooting purposes where appropriate • Support data analyses to make significant scientific decisions as requested • Participate in refinement of our laboratory's QC program to conform to CLIA/CAP, FDA, and EMA guidelines • Participate in trainings and compliance activities mandatory for the personnel working in CLIA/CAP accredited laboratories • Collect and enter data into Excel programs. • Assists in preparation of presentation • Demonstrates knowledge and understanding of patient privacy rights.

Facilitate transfer and tracking of study samples to and from the Lab by handling them appropriately by research protocol (10%): • Actively store and archive samples in the freezers as they arrive.

Under supervision, support other research projects by performing other laboratory established protocols (10%) MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS • Bachelor's degree in biology, microbiology or related?field AND one (1) year of relevant experience, OR Equivalent combination of education/experience. • Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license/certification/registration.

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS • Good laboratory practice (GLP) skills • Knowledge of QC parameters, including mathematical concepts of mean, standard deviation, and coefficient of variation; • Experience with Excel and Word for data entry and data analyses;
